Development :: The Mobile Web
In January 2010, Gartner released research findings showing that mobile web access - Internet usage from cell phones and smartphone - will overtake desktop computers as the most common means for web access by 2013.
While all Internet sites and services are accessible via mobile devices in the same way that they are from the desktop, the reality is that most are still not properly optimized for the mobile experience. Mobile users expect fewer clicks and appropriate visual design considerations relating to the smaller device screens.
To illustrate this, below are 2 screenshots of an online banking system taken from an iPhone (click an image to view full size). The first is the main website as viewed from the phone and the second is an alternate version of the site optimized for mobile browsing. Note that the mobile site utilizes the .mobi domain suffix as per industry standards and expectations.
